Urinary tract infections in male cats

Urinary tract infections in male cats

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid urinary tract infections for male cats who have had Perineal urethrostomy (PU for short)?

PU Surgery

My cat had this surgery a few months ago and my vet said to switch him to distilled water, which I did.  I had been giving him spring water and he seems to like the distilled just as much.

I also feed him science diet C/D which is to help with the urinary problem. You can't buy it in pet stores because it is prescription food but you can get it from a vet.

Since he had the PU surgery I was hoping that I wouldn't need to continue on that food since it is a little expensive. But my cat had so much grit in his urinary tract prior to the surgery, that the vet had a hard time getting in to unblock him. So I guess he thought it would be a good idea to keep him on the prescription food.

He did have a little infection right after the surgery which was treated and so far so good. Since he is completly healed, I have not had any problems. He did lose some weight through it all but is eating, playing and seems very happy.

Hope it helps with your cat.

Correction on brand of food

Sorry, I gave you the wrong brand on the cat food I give my cat for urinary problems.

It is Hill's Prescription Diet c/d and sold at your local vet.  Can not buy in stores.

The science diet food is for my other cat who does not have any urinary problems...yet.

Thanks and if you get any other suggestions, please pass them on.
